How Much Wallpaper Do You Need?

The answer depends on much more than the total square footage of your walls. To accurately calculate wallpaper, you must consider wall dimensions, roll size, ceiling height, and pattern repeat. Using the wrong calculation method can result in ordering too little wallpaper or paying for unnecessary extra rolls.

Why Square Footage Isn't Enough

Many online wallpaper calculators simply divide the total wall area by the coverage of a wallpaper roll. While this may work for paint, it is not an accurate way to calculate wallpaper.

Wallpaper is installed in full vertical panels, also called drops, not by square footage.

Each panel must run continuously from the ceiling to the floor, and depending on the pattern repeat, additional material may be required to align the design between strips.

The Professional Way to Calculate Wallpaper

Professional installers calculate wallpaper in two steps:

Step 1 – Calculate the Number of Full Panels

First, determine how many full wallpaper panels are needed to cover the width of the wall.

For example:

  • Wall width: 156 inches
  • Wallpaper width: 39 inches
  • Calculation: 156 ÷ 39 = 4 full panels required

The calculation is always based on full-width panels, even if the final strip needs to be trimmed.

Step 2 – Calculate How Many Panels Come From Each Roll

Next, determine how many full-length panels can be cut from a single wallpaper roll.

This depends on:

  • Roll length
  • Ceiling height
  • Pattern repeat
  • Trimming allowance

For example, if a roll produces 3 full panels and your project requires 8 panels, you'll need 3 rolls, not 2.

This is why simply comparing square footage often produces incorrect results.

Why Pattern Repeat Matters

Pattern repeat has a significant impact on wallpaper quantity.

Large-scale designs require extra material so each strip aligns perfectly with the next. The larger the pattern repeat, the fewer full panels you can cut from each roll.
